About the Company

American Industrial & Medical Products, Inc. (AIM) was established in July 1973 by Amar and Ani Kapur. From a humble beginning of a third floor apartment and garage for storage, the first operation was started in Worcester, Massachusetts. AIM supplied medical gases, respiratory and anesthesia supplies to hospitals and pharmaceutical companies in central Massachusetts. Amar Kapur earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Prior to starting AIM, Mr. Kapur worked for major U.S. corporations such as Caterpillar and DuPont Chemical. Mr. Kapur emigrated to the U.S. in 1961from Mumbai, India. In 1975, the company relocated to a 2,000 square foot facility in an industrial area of Worcester, MA. The company began to produce and supply Specialty Gases to Universities, Technology, R&D, and Life Sciences customers throughout Massachusetts. In 1977, the company acquired Bay State Oxygen, a Welding Supply and Industrial Gas distributor. The company expanded its customer base to include major industrial and manufacturing companies. In 1978, the company – now known as Aimtek, Inc. – received its first long term contract for bulk cryogenic liquid Nitrogen from Digital Equipment Company (known as Intel today) to supply its new semiconductor chip manufacturing facility in Massachusetts. Aimtek purchased additional bulk delivery equipment and began supplying bulk gases to companies throughout New England. The company also relocated to a larger 5,000 square foot facility in Auburn, MA. Aimtek divested its gases and welding supply distribution business in 2012. During the economic expansion of the 1980's, Aimtek expanded its product offering to include specialty brazing alloys and precious metals. These products were supplied to Aerospace and Semiconductor companies nationally. Aimtek also serviced the Power Generation, Shipbuilding, and Defense industries with major national brands of welding equipment and supplies. In 1991, Aimtek acquired Alliance Supply, a national distributor of Industrial, Safety, and Cleanroom supplies. Major clients included Lucent Technologies, Raytheon, Boeing, IBM, and Lockheed Martin. In 1998, Aimtek was named Region I Small Business Subcontractor of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, an award previously won by Aimtek in 1990. Aimtek was nominated for the award by Pratt & Whitney. In 2000, Aimtek acquired Bay State Surface Technologies, Inc., a pioneer and leading manufacturer of plasma spray equipment and powders. Recent technology advances include PLC-based controls and robotic interfaces. Bay State currently provides turnkey thermal spray solutions to aerospace and manufacturing companies worldwide. In 2003, Aimtek acquired Atech Turbine Components, Inc., an FAA and EASA certified overhaul and repair facility for Pratt & Whitney Canada turbine engine components. Processes used at Atech include manual and automatic TIG Welding, Robotic Plasma Spray coatings, CNC Machining, CMM Inspection, FPI, Blending, and Chemical Stripping. Atech is located in a 21,000 square foot facility in Auburn, Massachusetts. In 2004, Aimtek, Bay State Surface Technologies, and Atech Turbine Components achieved ISO9001 and AS9100 registration.
