Hybrid Role:
This is a hybrid position; you will be required to work at the WestJet Campus in Calgary approximately 2-3 days / week.
Candidates need to be located within Calgary Metropolitan Region.

WestJet is currently seeking a Accountant- Capital to support our Finance team. The successful candidate must exhibit a high standard of excellence, enjoys problem solving, and takes personal initiative. Working closely with fellow Finance team members and departmental stakeholders, this role is responsible for various aspects of the accounting cycle, with a special focus on process improvement.

 Key deliverables include:

  • Responsible with month-end activities including the preparation of month-end journal entries, assessing expenditures against the criteria for capitalization as per our Capital Asset Policy, balance sheet reconciliations and the preparation of the month-end capital reporting package
  • Responsible for posting monthly amortization, monthly asset transfers and disposals
  • Responsible for monthly continuity schedules for multiple companies
  • Prepare monthly statement of capital cashflow for multiple companies
  • Responsible for responding to ad-hoc requests on a timely basis to support business decisions
  • Perform detailed accounting and reporting activities on a recurring basis to support an accurate and timely period-end close, including:
    • Posting monthly accruals, reclasses and other journal entries
    • Developing, completing, and refining balance sheet reconciliations and investigating any anomalies to expectation
  • Continuously improve processes and procedures to evolve month-end deliverables alongside technology and operational changes
  • Be an active member of the Finance team; willing to brainstorm issues and be flexible in completing any task
  • Ensure compliance with C-Sox requirements, including maintaining and improving controls documentation and processes

 Experience and Qualifications:

  • Must have a post-secondary degree in a related field (i.e., Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting or Finance)
  • Must have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a finance role, with progressive levels of responsibility.
  • High level of Excel proficiency and a keen interest in learning new technology
  • Enrolment in a professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Working knowledge of IFRS, particularly with respect to IAS 16 and IAS 39 considered an asset
  • Proficiency in JDE or other similar ERP experience would be considered an asset
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, with a strong desire for continuous improvement  
  • Candidates must be adaptable and flexible, can handle multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy, prioritize and meet deadlines in an environment of continuous change and high-volume activity
