Job Description:

As an Environmental, Health &Safety Specialist, here is what you’ll be doing at the core, day to day.

  • Ensure that federal, state, and local environmental and safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules are observed including OSHA, EPA and other environmental and safety record keeping and reporting requirements.
  • Administer environmental/health/safety policies and procedures and training programs to meet State/Federal regulations and business requirements and make recommendations for changes as they are identified. Example: SWPPP, SPCC, RCRA, HAZCOM, Lockout/Tagout, Fall Protection, Ladder Safety, ADA, Modified Duty. Document SOP for otherwise undocumented processes to be reviewed with the EHS Manager.
  • Partner with operations, HR and training team related to employee discipline or training when identified as a corrective action and assist in establishing proper discipline worthy EHS infractions and other remedies to help build/improve our safety culture (e.g., failure to report, unsafe behaviors/ergonomics, bypassing safety devices or procedures, etc.).
  • Partner with Occupational Health and HR to identify injury trends and development and application of preventative programs (e.g., stretch and flex; ergonomic reviews, etc.).
  • Work with site to develop and complete corrective actions for legal counsel, regulatory agencies, and consultants on EHS multimedia regulatory issues, for example: air, water, waste, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, remediation, and safety issues to ensure compliance.
  • Work on retention and storage of documentation and paperwork for EHS programs and activities required for fact checking, future reference, audits, and general compliance.
  • Monitor activities where EHS risk could occur, halting any operation or activity that constitutes an imminent hazard to personnel, environment, or equipment.
  • Review accident/near miss reports to identify patterns and to determine what contributed to the accident/near miss; advise department of trends in accident/near miss and proper safety/environmental procedures/solutions that may result in reduction of accident/near misses.
  • Represent Company in local, state, and federal OSHA and EPA issues, audits, and responses.
  • May act as coordination point in emergency situations by staying apprised of emergency response systems, monitoring emergency activities and responding as outlined in company procedures.
  • Work to continue to develop KPA to become the Safety Management System and Environmental Management System application.

Here’s what is required to succeed as an Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist.

  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of EHS or Safety specialist experience at a facility, within aviation is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s in environmental science, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Physical Science, or related field or equivalent related work experience
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to environmental/health/safety (EHS) and general industry programs and practices
  • Working knowledge of the aviation industry and/or heavy maintenance preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the worker’s compensation process e.g., regulations, claims management, and third-party administrative management.
  • Completion of a minimum of 40 hours of training including all training pertaining to hazardous waste handling within 6 months from original date of hire into classification including 10 hours of additional training per year thereafter
  • Planning and organizational skills necessary to prioritize, assign, and coordinate workload of assigned area and employees within a multiple project setting; possess strong project management skills.
  • Computer skills necessary to learn and/or operate word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, email, and web-based applications.
  • Ability to work and influence with different departments and different levels of stakeholders and leaders to champion EHS programs and priorities.
  • Provide guidance in a safety committee role.
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible to handle change in meeting requirements and deadlines.
  • Facilities operate 24/7 therefore the EHS specialist must be willing to adapt as needed.
