Job Descriptions – Embedded HW/SW Design Engineering for Automatic Test Equipment (ATE)
6–12 Years
Domain: Aerospace / Electronic Test
Advanced Embedded Engineer – ATE / Electronic Test (6–12 Years)
Job Summary
We are seeking a Advanced Embedded Engineer with 6–12 years of experience in embedded hardware and software development for ATE and aerospace electronic test systems. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, integrating, documenting, and supporting embedded controller hardware, firmware, communication interfaces, and low-level software used in functional test, structural test, ESS, qualification testing, production testing, development testing, deployment, MSA, electronic test strategy support, and test process compliance. The role requires strong technical understanding of embedded architectures, instrumentation integration, interface design, and disciplined engineering documentation in aerospace environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded hardware and firmware/software architectures for ATE systems, including controller boards, embedded interface units, data acquisition/control modules, communication nodes, supervisory control logic, and health monitoring functions.
- Support end-to-end embedded implementation for functional test, structural test, ESS, qualification testing, production testing, and development testing applications.
- Prepare and review engineering documents including requirements, architecture descriptions, interface definitions, schematics, embedded software design documents, BOMs, verification plans, validation reports, release notes, and user/service documentation.
- Coordinate board bring-up, firmware/software integration, subsystem validation, debugging, fault isolation, and corrective action implementation during development and deployment phases.
- Work closely with hardware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, procurement, and project engineering teams to ensure system-level compatibility and build readiness.
- Perform component selection, design trade-offs, interface circuitry design, communication protocol integration, power/control considerations, and compliance checks for high-reliability environments.
- Develop reusable embedded libraries, driver layers, communication stacks, diagnostics, monitoring utilities, and automation hooks to improve consistency and reuse.
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews, readiness reviews, verification reviews, and issue closure activities.
- Support deployment planning, installation readiness, firmware/software configuration management, field updates, training support, and issue resolution where required.
- Coordinate or support MSA activities including data acquisition integrity, GR&R-related data handling, calibration awareness, correlation analysis support, and measurement system performance evaluation.
- Contribute to product-level electronic test strategy by aligning embedded design with coverage, reliability, maintainability, scalability, and production needs.
- Ensure compliance with defined test processes, embedded engineering standards, coding practices, configuration control, and aerospace documentation requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Embedded Systems, Instrumentation or a related discipline.
- 6–12 years of relevant experience in embedded HW/SW design engineering, ATE system development, or aerospace/defense embedded test environments.
- Strong experience in embedded controller design, firmware/software development, instrumentation integration, interface control, and controlled documentation.
- Experience supporting functional, structural, ESS, qualification, production, and development test setups.
- Good understanding of integration, debug, design reviews, release management, defect tracking, and engineering change processes.
- Ability to coordinate across cross-functional teams and manage technical deliverables to schedule.
- Working knowledge of embedded system reliability, measurement performance, and test process compliance expectations.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with C, C++, Python, RTOS, embedded Linux, device drivers, communication stacks, FPGA interfacing where applicable, and integration with test frameworks such as LabVIEW/TestStand or equivalent.
- Familiarity with oscilloscopes, debuggers, protocol analyzers, PXI/VXI platforms, DAQ systems, serial/Ethernet/CAN buses, and test instrumentation ecosystems.
- Knowledge of MSA, GR&R, calibration awareness, uncertainty analysis, correlation, and test data quality concepts.
- Understanding of EMI/EMC, grounding, shielding, timing behavior, software modularity, reuse, traceability, and safety considerations in embedded test design.
- Exposure to PLM/PDM tools, issue management systems, version control, CI practices where applicable, and aerospace compliance-controlled environments.
- Awareness of process compliance audits, documentation quality metrics, and customer-specific review requirements.
Key Competencies
- Strong technical problem-solving and debug capability.
- Ability to balance technical depth with schedule and delivery priorities.
- Cross-functional coordination and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong documentation and review discipline.
- Execution ownership, compliance focus, and quality mindset.
