Job SummaryAs a member of the RPAS Traffic Management (RTM) team within NAV CANADA’s Technology Organization, the Senior Systems Engineer contributes to aviation safety and operational efficiency in the rapidly growing use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in Canadian airspace.

The Senior System Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership and applying engineering expertise to the design, development, implementation, and life-cycle management of RTM and related systems.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Leads the preparation of detailed plans, system designs, and specifications to improve or enhance RTM and related systems.
  • Reviews and provides technical approval of concept and design documents.
  • Completes testing activities related to software updates and system configuration changes.
  • Provides technical expertise for assigned systems or provides Life-Cycle oversight to Product Managers of RTM and related systems.
  • Leads studies and investigations in technical topics related to RPAS traffic Management to develop new solutions for unresolved problems.
  • Provides technical support for capital project definition and formulation of national strategies to meet operational needs.
  • Keeps up to date on research in the RPAS Traffic Management industry.
  • Provides prompt assistance to investigate technical problems with in-service operational systems.
  • Provide second level support to internal and external RTM system users.
  • Actively promotes and contributes to a Safety and Quality culture within the team.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in electrical, electronics, communications, computer.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.

Experience:

  • 5 years progressive experience on complex engineering projects.
  • Experience working in the development and testing of mission-critical systems, either in‑house or through contractors.
  • Experience in a collaborative environment working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in the application of safety and quality management systems.

Knowledge:

  • A strong knowledge of Professional engineering standards and practice, theory and principles of engineering science and of the practices in specialized field of engineering.
  • Knowledge of software system development, integration and system testing.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies, techniques and disciplines for large projects.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data principles and practices.
  • knowledge of Air Navigation System and over all system architecture and functionality including air traffic management systems.

Abilities:

  • Ability to write technical specifications, standards, statements of work and other engineering documents.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize and manage multiple priorities with tight or conflicting deadlines in an environment of multiple priorities.
  • Ability to research potential development solutions and best practices and to learn new technologies, domains, and tools.
  • Ability to analyse and synthesize technical information, interpret the results of studies, develop strategies, and present recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Creative and innovative approach to solving problems.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, with tact and diplomacy, within cross functional teams and with external stakeholders.

Working conditions:

  • This position is based at the Ottawa Technical Services Center (280 Hunt Club Rd Ottawa, ON Canada) but may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement.
