Instrumentation Engineer: Instrumentation engineers work with a team of design and test engineers to assess and determine the sensors, data acquisition systems, and other test equipment required for FAA certification and company testing of aircraft and aircraft components. Kodiak Aircraft’s core competencies for instrumentation include electrical, computer, or aerospace engineering with programming experience.

Responsible for developing, acquiring, assembling, calibrating, and maintaining test instrumentation for both ground assets and aircraft.

Job description

  • Work with test engineers and DER’s to assess instrumentation requirements for aircraft and component testing in accordance with 14 CFR Part 23. 

  • Research and acquire new types of sensors, test equipment, and data acquisition systems to meet new testing requirements. 

  • Calibrate and install sensors, data acquisition systems, and other test equipment on test articles.   

  • Develop real-time LabVIEW test programs to process data from flight testing, static testing, dynamic testing, and fire testing, and develop automated test programs for flight crew.  

  • Design and build interface cables for instrumentation and perform full-system integration testing. 

  • Document instrumentation, installation, and processes, and support test plan and test report authoring.  

  • Assume responsibility for and maintain database records for calibration of all test equipment. 

  • Develop procedures for calibration of sensors and other test equipment and perform on-site equipment calibration. 

  • Develop test fixtures for instrumentation as required. 

  • Measure, align, fit, assemble, connect, and install components using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring equipment. 

  • Perform research, prepare documentation, reports, procedures, and tests. 

  • Determine parts, technical publications, and sequence of operations necessary for successful completion of assigned tasks. 

  • Collect and correlate data, recognizing discrepancies in results. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Profile and other information related to the position

  • Bachelors degree in electrical, computer, or aerospace engineering. 

  • Proficiency with MS Office strongly preferred. 

  • CAD proficiency, NX experience preferred.  

  • Experience with strain gages and load sensors a plus.  

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Knowledgeable in aircraft design, manufacturing, tooling, and systems. 

  • 2-4 years of experience working with data acquisition systems preferred. 

  • 2-4 years of LabVIEW programming experience in real-time applications preferred. 

  • Some familiarity with 14 CFR Part 23 (or similar) regulatory requirements. 

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems design and integration into aircraft.
