Boeing Defence UK (BDUK) is a subsidiary of the Boeing Company and currently employs over 1,400 people in the UK. We are responsible for delivering several exciting contracts to our UK defence customers including new capabilities like the E-7 AEW&C and the P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Autonomous Systems, C4ISR Services, Support for the Chinook & Apache Fleets, Logistic Information Services and Training Services and are very much in a growth phase.

Our programmes comprise of several service lines (i.e. workstreams) spanning communications systems, mission systems and platform integration as well as associated support elements. We require a Structural Analysis Engineer to join us to play a key part in the team responsible for delivering elements of capability and development, including product development and testing, mission support systems and training devices. The roles are fundamental in translating customer needs/requirements into appropriate solutions and will require the successful candidate to work in multidisciplinary teams to both generate proposals and develop deliverable solutions.

Our programmes are internationally run, with key partners being Boeing Defence, Space and Security, based in the USA, and Boeing Defence Australia. You will be part of our ongoing collaboration with these business units, and this provides opportunities for travel for short- or longer-term periods.

Key Tasks include:

  • Responsible for performing stress review and analysis while working as part of an integrated team.
  • Understand and show compliance with applicable regulations (including FAA and EASA) and requirements for certification where applicable.
  • Performs detailed structural analysis (static strength, durability/fatigue and damage tolerance) to determine structural integrity (margins of safety), using classical techniques and finite element modelling principles.
  • Generate documentation to report analysis and test results to support Certification/Qualification
  • Support Gated Reviews to validate the quality and completeness of work packages
  • Guides structural design and configuration development.
  • Researches and prepares data to support definition of structural design requirements.
  • Collaboration with Lead Engineers to create develop and integrate BDUK analysis methodologies & processes for structural analysis in support of a BDUK Stress Authority
  • Supports, and develops others

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Currently possess a Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry is desirable
  • Candidate must possess excellent understanding of Aircraft (Structure, Payloads) design, structural design and installation (Floor Panels, Layouts/Cargo Architecture).
  • 5+ years’ experience with structural design principles for manufacturing (e.g., materials strength, material characteristics, manufacturing processes, fatigue, damage tolerance, corrosion, stress analysis)
  • Experience working with Industry Standards, Regulations and Certification requirements
  • Experience in structural analysis of various structures
  • Experience with structural analysis of metallic and composite structures.
  • Experience with static and fatigue analysis
  • Robust understanding of engineering fundamentals such as material properties, Free-body diagrams, structural loads and analysis methods
  • Experience in utilizing FEM software (e.g. PATRAN/NASTRAN, ABAQUS, Hyperworks)
  • Experience with Boeing specific applications such IAS, CWS, XSA and others is desirable
  • Experience in using industry CAD systems (e.g., NX / CATIA) is desirable
  • Experience in using industry PDM/PLM systems (e.g. Teamcenter / ENOVIA) is desirable
  • Candidate demonstrates excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to liaise with several Stakeholders
  • Ability to work across functional teams and organizations
  • Experience creating and working to schedules
