Flight Paramedic 

Job Description Summary: The Paramedic Lead is responsible for ensuring smooth day-to-day operations by facilitating communication between field staff and leadership, monitoring system status and making time-critical decisions, reporting daily issues and achievements to leadership, acting as a role model to field employees, and providing coaching opportunities when standards are not upheld.

Responsibilities

Flight Nurse/Flight Paramedic duties

  • Provides pre-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility maintaining thorough patient care documentation.
  • Knowledgeable in the use and routine malignance of all equipment and supplies used by emergency programs.
  • Attends pre-mission briefings and mission debriefing and completes necessary documentation.
  • Assists in pre-mission liftoff checklist and pilot assistance when needed, i.e., radio, navigational and visual observation activities.
  • Conducts aircraft safety briefings as needed.
  • Maintains awareness of current issues related to pre-hospital care through participation in professional activities, i.e., national, state legislative-elected or appointed.
  • Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment prior to liftoff.
  • Functions as a medical flight member

Administrative duties as a medical crew member

  • Responsible for the completion and submission of Flight Records
  • Responsible for daily Narcotic count
  • Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
  • Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, safety, and advanced procedures in the base files.
  • Maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, EMS representatives, hospitals, and the public.
  • Participates regularly in departmental activities, projects, and committees.
  • Attends and participates in meetings according to established base guidelines.
  • Acts as a preceptor and/or participates in orientation of new employees.
  • Maintains awareness of current issues related to pre-hospital care through participation in professional activities, i.e., national, state legislative-elected or appointed.

Clinical

  • Collaborates with Clinical Practices team, program director, medical director to provide base level QA/QI information to flight staff.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Staff Development Specialist, Regional Educator, program directors, medical directors, and Regional Manager of Clinical practices to provide training programs based on QA trends.
  • Assists with coordinating outreach education courses along with other base staff.
  • Serves in a supportive role to crew members and PD to assure timely completion and reporting of annual OSHA required training (blood borne pathogens, back safety, TB skin testing etc.)
  • Provides mentorship/orientation for new employees assigned to the base within the scope of practice.
  • Assists as needed and available with the regionally based initial and recurrent training for employees.
  • Works with Base staff, Clinical Practice educators, Director of clinical practices and clinical development to determine base educational needs.
  • Verifies and reports to clinical practices the completion of required annual skills for each base staff member and maintains records of annual skills in a base file.
  • Assists as needed with quarterly competency training to base staff as outlined by the Director of Clinical Practices, Staff Development, and Medical Directors.
  • Works with the Program Director to reconcile base narcotic compliance to include ordering, tracking, and returns as directed by the Controlled Substance Specialist
  • Works with the Program Director to reconcile Blood transfusion reports to include ordering, tracking, and returns.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Must meet the requirements of a Flight Nurse or Flight Paramedic

Skills:

  • PHTLS or BTLS, NRP, BCLS, ACLS, and PALS completed prior to flight status.
  • FP-C or CCPC required.
  • CCRN, CFRN and EMT as required by state.
  • Must acquire/maintain instructor status in: ACLS, PALS, PHTLS and/or ITLS and BLS
  • Ability to read analyze, and interpret health and flight-related journals, hospital reports, and job specific legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to perform mathematical functions.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Experience:

  • Must meet the minimum requirements for a Flight Nurse or Flight Paramedic
  • One year of full-time employment with the Company is preferred.
  • Must have completed full clinical internship.
