Position Overview:

Responsible to set-up, load program, select and set-up tool, test the program and ensure the computer numeric controlled (CNC) machines (i.e. multi-axis milling machines or lathes) will operate and produce all types of aircraft and aerospace components, sub-assemblies and final assemblies in accordance with customer or engineering specifications, Company procedures, SWIMS, etc.  

What You Will Do:
  • Communicate/receive instructions with/from Supervisor and/or Charge Hand in the transition of the workflow and production work scheduling; to assess current material needs and/or to address any problems accordingly.
  • Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and the use safety equipment will be the highest priority for you and your co-workers;
  • Refer to process sheets, blueprints and/or part sketches to determine machining requirements, dimensional specifications, set-up and/or operating requirements;
  • Work with, read and/or interpret drawings, sketches and blueprints and/or read and understand manuals/specifications to determine set-up procedure, dimensions and tolerances of finished products.
  • Set-up, upload and/or edit CNC programs, select and/or prepare tooling as required and efficiently operate applicable CNC Machine;
  • Work with, and oversee machine (or multiple machines) while machine(s) executes the machining task and prepare/set-up next job preparation; 
  • Make adjustments or request any necessary adjustments and/or work closely with CNC Programmer to resolve programming issues in order to produce better machining results;
  • Ensure effective production of quality parts by checking parts to drawings, sketches, etc. while using gauges and measuring equipment;
  • Select and grind cutting tools in accordance with the hardness, machine ability and other properties of parts or materials to be machined;
  • Obtain or make shop aids or machine attachments necessary to complete machining tasks;
  • Check and measure work with gauges, micrometers, calipers and other precision measuring instruments;
  • Deburr and inspect parts to assure conformance to CNC machine’s set-up sheet, blueprints, customer specifications, Company workplace instructions, SWIMS, manuals, etc.;
  • Perform routine daily maintenance with Maintenance Personnel, help troubleshoot CNC Machine for problems and/or clean equipment accordingly;
  • Keep tools, equipment and immediate work area(s) in a clean, orderly and safe condition;
  • Meet physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, lifting heavy objects, climbing, crouching, operating tools, and wearing safety gear.
What You Will Bring:
  • Completion of High School (Grade 12) or equivalent experience and/or training;
  • Completion of 1-year Machinist Program AND 1-year CNC Manufacturing Technician Certificate and at least 2-years’ experience;
  • Completion of an Aircraft Blueprint Course OR have a demonstrated ‘Tested” ability to read aircraft blueprints;
    Must have a minimum Level ‘A’ Sheet Metal experience;
  • Must possess a high level of manual dexterity, keen eye and attention to detail and a strong interest in aircraft assembly and/or repair;
  • Must meet physical requirements of the position including but not limited to: walking, static standing for extended periods, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting/trunk rotation, weight bearing / lifting , carrying, pushing & pulling heavy objects; hand/wrist gripping, grasping, pinching, vibration depend on tasks/tools, neck & back flexion, 
    Completion of Global Harmonized System (WHMIS) course;
  • Must be eligible to meet the requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and the Canadian Security Clearances – Secret Level II;
  • Must be able to work co-operatively with others and follow directives precisely;
  • Knowledge of processes, products and equipment and ability to read blueprints and engineering documentation will be considered an asset;
  • Adhere to, and demonstrate a personal commitment to IMP Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Policies.  Continually focusing on your individual safety and the safety of others who may be affected by your work and to fully comply with all Nova Scotia Provincial Health, Safety and Environment Legislation.
