Job Description:

With more than 120 operations and approximately 20,000 employees worldwide, Precision Castparts Corp. is the market leader in manufacturing large, complex structural investment castings, airfoil castings, forged components, aerostructures and highly engineered, critical fasteners for aerospace applications. In addition, we are the leading producer of airfoil castings for the industrial gas turbine market. We also manufacture extruded seamless pipe, fittings, and forgings for power generation and oil & gas applications; commercial and military airframe aerostructures; and metal alloys and other materials for the casting and forging industries. With such critical applications, we insist on quality and dependability – not just in the materials and products we make, but in the people we recruit.

PCC is relentless in its dedication to being a high-quality, low-cost and on-time producer; delivering the highest value to its customers while continually pursuing strategic, profitable growth.

In 2016, Berkshire Hathaway, led by Chairman and CEO Warren E. Buffett, acquired Precision Castparts Corp.

Job Description:

Screw machine operators perform various tasks on multiple-spindle, automatic lathe-type screw machines, which are used to produce custom parts from metal or other materials. They ensure the machines are set up correctly to perform necessary operations as per the blueprints. The role involves selecting cutting speeds, depths of cuts, machine speeds, and appropriate tools based on experience, material knowledge, and mathematical principles.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Machine Setup and Operation:

    • Install and adjust cams, gears, and stops on the screw machine.
    • Verify cutting tool positions using gauges and other instruments.
    • Monitor machine operation, adjusting speeds, feed rates, and tool positions for accuracy.
  • Quality Control:

    • Produce a sample part and verify it meets blueprint specifications using tools such as calipers and micrometers.
    • Label finished products and keep accurate records of materials used and productivity.
  • Maintenance and Repair:

    • Perform regular maintenance, replace work parts, and sharpen tools.
    • Maintain balancing machines and associated tooling.
    • Perform minor maintenance functions, including lubrication.
Principal Activities:
  • Plan and perform gear inspection.
  • Set up and operate machines for lapping gears, selecting proper tooling to meet close tolerances.
  • Perform related bench functions (e.g., deburring, cutting splines, marking part numbers).
  • Perform dynamic balancing of rotors, propellers, and other rotating elements.
  • Set up and operate Bridgeport machines, including writing programs and making special fixtures.
  • Run multiple machines or operations simultaneously.
  • Operate a cutoff saw to prepare raw materials for machining.
  • Engage in diversified mechanical duties, including reading complicated prints and specifications.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Participate in bench assembly operations as needed.
  • Perform various setups for different machine parts.
  • Utilize various hand tools, drill presses, and other equipment for bench functions.
  • Remove burrs from all machined parts.
  • Report defective materials and faulty operations to the supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Record labor times and other related data accurately on standard forms.
Job Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in reading blueprints and understanding geometric tolerances.
  • Familiarity with machinist and hand tools (e.g., micrometers, verniers, dial bore gauges).
  • Ability to be a team player, self-motivated, and open to change and innovation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; concentration in machining is a plus.
  • 1 to 3 years of machining experience preferred.
  • U.S. Citizenship required for Department of Defense (DOD) requirements.
