Job Description:

The Aircraft Mechanic II (Safety/Hazmat) maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty.

  • Plans and carrier out an itinerary of periodic inspections of the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Inspects shipment containers for compliance with applicable hazardous materials regulations and safety appliance standards.
  • Conducts investigations of unintentional releases of hazardous materials, or other accidents/incidents resulting in serious injury to person(s) or to property.
  • Determines probably cause of accident or incident and if regulations were violated.
  • Develops comprehensive reports (e.g., accident, incident, and notices of probably violation) which outline findings and recommendations.
  • Develop and administer safety related regulations and standards pertaining to the maintenance and operation of aircraft.
  • Examine maintenance personnel for initial safety certifications and continuing competence.
  • Evaluate maintenance personnel training programs, equipment, and facilities.
  • Evaluate the operational aspect of programs used for aviation maintenance operations to determine adequacy of facilities, equipment, procedures, and overall management to ensure safe maintenance and operation of aircraft.
  • Perform a variety of other inspections, investigations, and advisory duties.  
  • Maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
  • Remove and install aircraft subsystem assemblies and components such as engines, rotors, transmissions, mechanical flight controls and their components.
  • Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions.
  • Applies required expertise in restoring equipment condition and or operation.
  • Applies comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as aircraft technical manuals, maintenance information, blueprints or manufactures’ manuals and action messages.
  • Service and lubricate aircraft and subsystems.
  • Safely prepares aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks and services.
  • Perform scheduled inspections and assist in performing special inspections.
  • Perform limited maintenance operational checks and diagnoses and troubleshoots aircraft systems using special tools and test equipment as required.
  • Use and perform operator maintenance on tools, special tools and aircraft ground support equipment.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have completed the Additional Duty Safety Couse (ADSC) as outlined in AR/DA PAM 385 series.
  • Must have training documentation detailing knowledge of DA PAM 385-10 Chapters 3, 4-3, 7,8,9,10,11,13, and 14.
  • Must have training documentation detailing knowledge of AR 95-20 Chapter 6 Aviation Safety program Elements to include certificate or course work in Mishap Prevention Program, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, protection of Aircraft on the Ground, and Aircraft hangars (NAS 3306).
  • Must have three (3) years of safety experience in rotorcraft maintenance.
  • Must have a four (4) year Environmental Health/Safety degree or equivalent approved.
  • Must have at least two (2) years aviation safety management experience or eight (8) years safety management experience.
  • Must have a valid up-to-date A&P license and must have two years aviation maintenance experience, three years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two years on the assigned MDS.  All experience must be within the five most recent years.
  • If no A&P license, must have three years aviation maintenance experience, three years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two years on the assigned Mission Design Series (MDS).  All experience must be within the five most recent years.
  • Must possess the level of experience necessary to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by skill class Mechanic I and must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions.
  • Required basic knowledge of electrical theory.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
  • Must have a working knowledge of making entries in aircraft logbooks & records, military technical publications, and the Armys Unit Level Logistics Aviation Information System, ULLSAE. 
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts, requires broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair, must have basic knowledge of electrical theory, must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers. 
  • The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, will occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records. 
  • Must be able to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
  • Participate in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
  • Possess the level of experience to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by mechanic.
  • All mechanics assigned to perform maintenance on FAA certified aircraft must meet FAA requirements.
  • Must provide own tools/toolbox. Tools must be shadowed and etched with PID.
  • Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.

Clearance Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NACI(T1) Public Trust Security Clearance. Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization to work at this facility.

Physical/Preferred Requirements:

  • Frequently lifts parts and equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally lifts objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Most heavy lifting is accomplished using mechanical devices.
  • Work is performed in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Is exposed to disagreeable fumes and to cuts and bruised from using tools in close placed and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts in shop area.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance.
  • Knowledge of military and/or company forms required by work specifications is a plus.
