Gem Air is a part 135 fixed-wing operator based in Salmon, Idaho. We fly the Idaho backcountry for outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, hunters, and fishermen, as well as year-round cargo routes for UPS and charters.
We are looking for an experienced Director of Maintenance (DOM) to oversee the maintenance of our fleet, as well as to lead the charge on planned improvements in training and processes.
Our ideal candidate has proven people management skills, has experience working with the FAA on regulatory issues in a part 135 environment, and is familiar and very comfortable with both piston and turbine fixed-wing aircraft. Our ideal candidate also has experience implementing new and effective training and procedures.

THE ENVIRONMENT
The environment you’ll work in is a combination of outside areas and an office/hanger setting. Winter season is slower, with a more regular weekday schedule. Summer is extremely busy, and will frequently require weekend and evening work. You will work independently as the team leader of the maintenance department, but you will also need to work closely with other management, as well as pilots.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead Gem Air maintenance department to ensure that aircraft are maintained in a safe and reliable manner
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and compliance with part 135 regulations as regards maintenance, records, and parts and inventory
- Assist with hands-on troubleshooting and inspections when needed, and take the lead on needed major repairs/alterations, to include working with engineering/manufacturers when needed.
- Be the main point of contact with the FAA as regards maintenance.
- Maintain and manage company operations specifications as needed.
- Assist other management with evaluating current maintenance training and processes, determining needed changes, and leading the implementation of those changes.
- Manage mechanics and parts employees, including hiring, training, managing work schedule, coaching for improvement, and when necessary, terminating.
- Schedule and/or provide necessary training for yourself as well as other maintenance team members.
- Oversee team members’ work to verify competency and identify and address any personnel issues.
- Plan and lead regular shop meetings to ensure consistent communication and promote consistent understanding
- Actively participate in management meetings to ensure cross-departmental understanding.
- Responsible for assessing maintenance-related costs and managing for efficiency to increase profitability
- Assure all aircraft, equipment, and maintenance area facilities are constantly in compliance with all FAA, OSHA, industry, and company guidelines.
- With the operations office, establish and supervise maintenance schedules that ensure proper servicing of planes and equipment at specified times.
- Ensure necessary parts are ordered in a timely manner to ensure minimal aircraft downtime while avoiding unnecessary inventory buildup.
- Be honest, fair, professional, and ethical in all dealings with team members as well as courteous and respectful to all customers, governmental agencies, and vendors.
