Definition

Incumbents troubleshoot and diagnose aircraft maintenance problems and perform duties related to routine maintenance, structural repairs, rebuilding and/or upgrading of major aircraft components and systems, and keeping maintenance records.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

  • Training, Education, and Experience
  • Three years of increasingly responsible maintenance and repair experience as an FAA-certified Airframe and Powerplant Technician; or
  • Five years of increasingly responsible maintenance and repair experience in the United States military on at least one type of aircraft owned and operated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and currently an FAA-certified Airframe and Powerplant Technician.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by specialized training and classes in helicopter and aircraft repair.
  • Possession of a current Airframe and Powerplant Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. Candidates will be required to submit a copy, in the form of an attachment, (both front and back) of this Certificate with the online application.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Nevada Driver's license.

Best Candidates Will Have

  • Maintenance experience on MD500/MD530 series and Airbus H125, H135, and H145 series helicopters.
  • Avionics experience.
  • Specialized training and classes in helicopter repair.
  • Familiarity with the Digital Airware Aviation Management Software program.

Personal Appearance:

While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles, or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow, or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches except for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promotes racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contains sexually explicit material is prohibited.

  • Be available for callouts
  • Be available for working shifts, holidays and weekends, or irregular work hours
  • Maintain a current FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate and Nevada Driver's license
  • Possess a complete set of aircraft mechanic tools
  • Must not have incurred any FAA suspensions/revocations.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Wellness Program.
  • Vision sufficient to read an aircraft's control board, computer screen, and fine prints in documents.
  • Color vision is sufficient to distinguish among colored power and signal cables and color indicators on an aircraft's control board.
  • Hearing sufficient to hear conversations and directions in person and over the telephone and radio.
  • Dexterity and mobility sufficient to operate inside of and perform maintenance tasks in an aircraft, operate standard office equipment, and motorized vehicles; climb ladders and stairs; and work indoor and outdoors, including the office and maintenance shop.
  • Agility sufficient to bend, twist, crawl, stoop, squat, kneel, stretch, and reach overhead, forward, and backward; rotate neck and trunk.
  • Endurance sufficient to stand and move around for long periods of time to work in the repair shop; sit at personal computer terminals.
  • Strength sufficient to lift, carry, and shelve aircraft parts and related items, weighing up to 50 lbs.

Application Screening (Pass/Fail)

Exam #1:  LVMPD Air Support Hangar Tour/Seminar (Optional) - Monday, July 29, 2024  at 10:00 am (PST)  
Exam #2:  Practical Exam (Weighted 40%) - Beginning Tuesday, July 30, 2024   
Exam #3:  Oral Board Exam (Weighted 60%) - Beginning Wednesday, July 31, 2024    

*The LVMPD reserves the right to modify the selection processes and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards.

**Due to security reasons, personal belongings permitted in the testing facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks, briefcases, duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees administering the examination and may be subject to a search.

If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam.  A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment. Candidates are encouraged  to consult with their personal physicians to discuss whether the polygraph will affect a condition or treatment and then follow the guidance of their medical professional.
 
The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete.
