Manager, Commodity Taxes - Passenger Revenues

We are looking for a highly motivated person for a Manager, Commodity Taxes position in Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL), or Winnipeg (YWG).  This person will report directly to the Senior Manager, Commodity Taxes – Passenger Revenues.

General Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing tax advice and guidance to business units on all taxes, fees and charges (TFC) applicable on passenger revenues (including tickets, ancillary revenues, services fees, cancellation fees) or non-revenue tickets.
  • Responsible for reviewing and maintaining all sales systems to ensure passenger ticket taxes are coded and collected appropriately.
  • Responsible for interpreting and keeping abreast of TFC laws and contracts (for example ATSC, AIF, PFF, Transportation tax, Tourism tax, APDs, Security fees, APHIS, Passengers airport charges) and assess potential impacts to the Air Canada operations, and communicate it to business units to implement the appropriate changes throughout the Air Canada group to ensure compliance with new legislation, new routes, and new products.
  • Responsible for reviewing and providing guidance on contracts with airports or other government authorities in regards to TFC.
  • Responsible for the implementation of all new TFC (driven by legislation and/or contractual agreements) in regards to passenger revenues (including redemption tickets) and non-revenue passengers (including employee travel).
  • Support Director, compliance/accounting /audit with tax advice and guidance during external audits.
  • Implement audit corrective measures, including working with IT and other groups to ensure appropriate front-end system changes are programmed, tested and implemented (including ALTEA, GDS flows and  ETS-X)

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Interpret commodity taxes legislation and develop policies / procedures to ensure Air Canada and its subsidiaries are in compliance with commodity taxes legislation with regards to collection, data compilation and remittance process of TFCs.
  • Responsible for System Testing required for new initiatives and projects that affect tax calculations.
  • Work with IT, ATPCO and IATA to investigate and resolve system defects related to TFC.
  • Support Senior Manager in tax filings and tax updates required with ATPCO, Altea, IATA, and other parties responsible for sales system tax logic.
  • Support IT & commercial with the implementation of new TFC legislationew contractual agreements as it relates to front end systems and with any commercial initiatives impacting TFC collection.
  • Identify and continuously improving indirect tax processes and internal controls.
  • Keep up-to-date on current changes in commodity taxes legislation, analyse impact on Air Canada operations, and communicate it to branch financial officers of business units. 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with colleagues within the IT group and other system stakeholders to ensure continuous collaboration with the Tax Department for any new system implementation and/or system modification.
  • Develop guidelines, training materials, job aids for Tax Department as required.
  • Assist the Director Commodity Taxes with all other related tasks.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or Finance, CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) designation preferred, Law Degree, or Business Technology.
  • Completion of Commodity Taxes courses/ Tax degree is an asset.
  • Experience with sales systems and systems implementation.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the commodity tax field.  Experience in the transportation industry is an asset.
  • Significant experience interpreting and analyzing tax legislation.
  • Knowledge of international commodity tax legislation (e.g., GST, SUT, VAT) an asset. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to be a team player.
  • Strong analytical skills combined with a demonstrated ability to handle multiple files.
  • Excellent organizational skills, autonomy and ability to work under pressure.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
