From conducting flight safety investigations and educating pilots on potential safety threats to implementing medical programs and helping prevent employee injuries, our team is instrumental in running a safe and successful airline for our customers and employees.
Job overview and responsibilities
This position is responsible for leading the strategic direction and operational execution of United’s Drug Abatement program across all United locations. This role ensures strict compliance with DOT and FAA regulations while overseeing a large team of field representatives and managers in the delivery of a 24/7 testing operation. The position drives continuous improvement through strategic initiatives, technology enhancements, and process optimization. Additionally, this role serves as a key liaison with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, legal teams, labor relations, and vendors, to maintain program integrity and operational excellence.
- Operational Excellence – Oversee the performance and execution of United’s Drug & Alcohol Testing program, ensuring consistency and regulatory compliance
- Support 24/7 operations and respond to operational issues as they arise
- Team Leadership – Provide leadership and guidance to a large team of field representatives and managers across all hub locations, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment
- Strategic Planning and Execution – Lead strategic initiatives for the Drug Abatement program, including technology and process improvements
- Regulatory Oversight – Maintain Designated Employer Representative (DER) certification and regulatory oversight rotation
- Stakeholder Engagement – Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including United’s Employee Assistance Program, Legal, Labor Relations, Operating Workgroups, HR, vendors, and regulatory bodies
QualificationsWhat’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelors degree or 4 years of relevant work experience
- Proven track record with 5+ years of leadership experience, effectively managing and mentoring direct reports to achieve organizational goals.
- Operational Experience within airline setting (2+ years)
- Ability to analyze, improve and communicate complex processes to all levels of United leadership
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a diverse team, supported by proven supervisory experience.
- Strong critical thinking skills paired with sharp business acumen to drive informed decision-making.
- Proven expertise in problem-solving, coupled with exceptional organizational abilities to manage complex tasks efficiently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams, ensuring seamless collaboration and productivity.
- Adept at responding to urgent situations with agility, including participation in a 24/7 support as needed
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
- Masters degree
- Experience specific to United Airport Operations, Inflight or Flight Ops
- Working knowledge of 49 CFR Part 40.
- Working knowledge of 14 CFR Part 120
- Experience managing an enterprise-wide drug and alcohol program
- Project Management Experience
- Change Management and Process Improvement Experience
- Experience leading large technology projects and enhancements
The base pay range for this role is $118,275.00 to $153,980.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
