Summary Conceptualization, development, and commercialization of proprietary superalloy products, primarily those produced in the vacuum induction melting (VIM) process. Identification and attainment of industrial programs where C-M proprietary products can be promoted. Customer and industry interfacing to help achieve increasingly greater market penetration for the C-M proprietary products. Identification and attainment of technical collaboration agreements with relevant users of VIM alloy product, with the goal of speeding product commercialization and application. Company image enhancement through industry and customer related technical presentations and brochure preparation. R&D and VIM furnace process control. Directs C-M lab operations (chemistry and metallography incl. SEM). Directs C-M lab customer service business. Internal support of C-M production, and external technical support to customers (foundries and OEM’s). Development of melting and refining practices, controls, raw materials, and aim chemistry for all VIM superalloy products, and in conjunction with Manufacturing, stainless steel & cobalt-based alloys. - Adhere to all Company 6-S initiatives and policies.
- Manage the C-M Technology Department including work assignment planning, time scale, budget, and personnel evaluations.
- Ensure C-M vacuum induction melting and refining aim chemistry, raw materials, trace and tramp element and cleanliness for cast superalloys remain state of the art and that consistent heat quality, including blend heats, reflects this technology.
- Review all incoming vacuum superalloy customer specifications with either acceptance or negotiation of technical changes. Ensure any process changes at C-M are introduced successfully.
- Internal C-M production support, including heat sheet review, heat certification, specification review and maintenance in related business systems, new item creation, internal quality, customer inquiries and complaints, review, and maintenance of TWI’s.
- Ensure our major accreditations including: NADCAP (quality dept), customer process agreements/fixed process outlines are maintained and updated, as needed.
- Provide a world class technical service to both immediate casting house customers and ultimate customers.
- Keep current with the latest technology development in C-M’s major marketplaces through review of new pertinent patents/patent applications, technical papers, journals, and conference proceedings.
- Enhance market intelligence and penetration for C-M through multi-level contacts including design and project engineering, purchasing and senior management at major ultimate customers or potential ultimate customers.
- Participate in the preparation and presentation of significant technical papers, particularly joint papers with the turbine engine companies, at major turbine engineering/superalloy conferences, with the objective of growing and broadening C-M’s worldwide market penetration.
- As required, in conjunction with Manufacturing, ensure our AOD refining and continuous casting practices are competitive.
- Oversees laboratory department operations and customer technical service for analytical chemistry and metallography requirements.
- Participates in the investigation of customer technical problems with the C-M produced alloys.
- Up to date with latest laboratory technology – testing capabilities.
- Manage the C-M R & D budget – financial and work time scale completions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education and Experience Master of Science Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering with emphasis on Metallurgy. Fifteen (15) years’ experience in the Aerospace/IGT materials field with preferred knowledge of cast superalloys, melting, and refining of superalloys and stainless steels, and strong background in physical and microstructural metallurgy.
