PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Environmental Technician is responsible for monitoring and assessing environmental conditions. Environmental Tech duties includes, but not limited to, setting up equipment to collect field data, collect samples in the air, soil and water; monitor pollutants, identify risks; monitor environmental factors and provide results to environmental scientist, management and other members. Outdoor work is subject to extreme temperatures, noise, and inclement weather conditions and other conditions determined by the nature of the job. Provides support and guidance to assigned personnel in the area of the Government environmental programs. The Environmental Tech continues to support the Arsenal mission, proactively solve problems, and deliver quality services safely in the performance of the Rock Island BOS PWS.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Monitor the environmental elements assigned to RIA BOS and investigate sources of pollution.

  • Performs necessary testing and field testing.

  • Be familiar with requirements for environmental problems that affect public health.

  • Maintain and keep records up to date and present when requested.

  • Inspects inventory for any defects and ensures consumable assets are adequate.

  • Collects water samples from raw, semi-processed or processed water, industrial wastewater to assess pollution problems.

  • Install and maintain data collection instrumentations.

  • Perform project monitoring and air sampling for asbestos, lead, and mold abatement projects.

  • Conduct bacteriological or other tests related to research in environmental or pollution control activity.

  • Perform basic calculations and computer data entry.

  • Operate light and medium equipment to perform fieldwork duties.

  • Use portable radios to communicate with supervisors, and service call desk.

  • Enforces safety protocol for handling hazardous materials.

  • Responsible for timely reporting of accidents, injuries, and hazardous situations.

  • Timely completion and accuracy of all inspections and work.

  • Works closely and harmoniously with other employees.

  • Must be able to multitask. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to work independently and stay on task with minimal supervision.

  • Must possess experience in environmental work, fieldwork and compliance regarding Government contracts.

  • Must possess strong knowledge of safety, hazardous and environmental warnings.

  • Must have knowledge using Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Must posses strong listening, speaking, writing skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Must have skills in understanding work-related documents.

  • Must be trustworthy.  

  • Must provide factual information to local, state and Tunista management team.

  • Ability to identify potential hazards and mitigate them.

  • Ability to provide detailed report, briefing and advise.

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.  

  • Must have knowledge of environmental data collection databases to include in administrative level entries.

  • Must be an excellent communicator and have fair judgement.  

  • Must be able to attend Government conferences, as required.

  • Able a multi-tasker.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Two (2) years’ experience of Environmental Field/Lab work in DoD Contract facility maintenance operations.

  • Must be able to lift objects up to 55lbs.

  • Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolds, and walkways, able to complete tasks in high or confined spaces.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Projects.

  • Must be able to work on secure military facilities.

  • Must have current valid driver’s license and clean driving record and be qualified to operate a vehicle.

  • Must be able to pass a DoD background check, pass drug screening tests and obtain SECRET security clearance.
