Role Introduction
  • Group Legal and Compliance department (GLC) is responsible for providing high quality legal services to the Cathay Group and is mandated to provide legal services in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • GLC is seeking a high calibre regulatory lawyer to join its practice group. This role is responsible for providing legal and regulatory support to Cathay Group’s business and operations in the Chinese Mainland.
  • As Legal Counsel, you will be working in a challenging and dynamic industry, across multiple jurisdictions. This is an excellent opportunity to build an in-house career with a leading and iconic company.
Key Responsibilities
  • To be the trusted legal advisor and good team player to business units, who is able to identify and assess legal risk and provide sound and pragmatic legal advice that is solution-oriented for multiple business units in a fast-paced environment, based on a good understanding of corporate objectives and aims.
  • To monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting the group’s business and operations in the Chinese Mainland, and work with other members from GLC on development and implementation of policies, procedures and training to ensure adherence to applicable laws, regulations and industry standards.
  • To offer sound legal advice and ethical guidance to business teams on a diverse range of legal subjects independently, ensure regulatory compliance with Cathay’s values and policies.  Instruct and work alongside external law firms on larger projects when needed.
  • To collaborate with stakeholders at all levels across the organization and know when to escalate risks, and advise on complex legal and compliance issues, based on a solid understanding of corporate governance and decision-making processes within a listed group.
  • To serve as an ambassador of compliance culture, and play a lead role in fostering integrity, responsibility, accountability and inclusivity across the organization.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 8 years of post-admission experience as a lawyer admitted to practice law in the People’s Republic of China.
  • At least 6 years’ experience in regulatory compliance matters with multinational companies or reputable law firms. Prior In-house experience is an advantage.
  • Technically strong and able to provide legal advice to the business on a diverse range of legal and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Keen attention to detail, and able to see and understand the bigger picture to advise the business pragmatically.
  • Commercially savvy with excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with people at all levels and work in a multi-cultural work environment.
  • Possesses an entrepreneurial spirit, willing to learn and continuously innovates to achieve great results.
  • Able to work proactively and independently with minimum supervision, can effectively prioritize work under time pressure, with strong project and time management skills.
  • Mature and well organized and has a high sense of responsibility and accountability for their work.
  • Fluent in spoken and written Chinese and English.
  • Proficiency in office applications.
