Provide Physical Scientist / Evidence Analyst support to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Laboratory Division (LD) to apply scientific capabilities and technical services to the collection, processing, and exploitation of evidence for the FBI and other duly constituted law enforcement and intelligence agencies in support of investigative and intelligence priorities.
Essential Duties
The Physical Scientist spends most of their time in the laboratory processing and documenting firearms evidence. Since the findings from the analysis can be used in court, analysts must follow strict protocols regarding the custody of evidence, testing procedures, and reporting guidelines. Physical Scientists must become familiar with and adhere to all LD and unit level quality control procedures and document their work activities accordingly.
• Receive and account for boxes of evidence and related materials from the Evidence Management Unit.
• Visually inspect and process evidence and related materials for firearms evidence; photograph evidence and related materials.
• Conduct test firing of firearms to collect bullets, cartridge cases, or shotshells.
• Enter information into various FBI databases.
• Perform sample acquisitions into the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN).
• Record case notes, photographs, chain-of-custody forms, and electronic communications.
• Use eLab software for evidence inventory, tracking, and flow.
• Maintain proper chain-of-custody for all forensic material under examination.
• Support activities, functions, or duties, as defined in future TOs.
• Participates with senior personnel in research studies which involve systematic, critical and intensive investigation necessary for the development of experimental processes.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Physical Scientist will not have supervisory responsibilities.

• Individual shall have experience leading a diversified team in a forensic laboratory.
• Individual shall possess strong interpersonal and team building skills, with a proven ability to attract, hire and motivate a strong management team.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills required.
• Intermediate to Expert computer skills specifically using Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs. Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff.
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to evaluate data and consider decision impact across multiple areas.
• High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently. Ability to multi-task.
• Should be able to demonstrate relationship building skills and be comfortable interacting with professionals at all organizational levels.
• Demonstrated negotiation skills for interaction with both customers and internal stakeholders.
• Must be able to interface with the customer, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders such as contracts/subcontracts, finance, purchasing, and human resources.
