The Tax Advisor is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day compliance with tax laws and regulations, while ensuring accurate, complete and timely tax filings. This position responds to tax auditor inquiries, analyze financial systems information and develop internal controls. It provides substantial advice, recommendations and effective communication of tax policies and procedures throughout the organization and will collaborate with other team members to develop efficient tax guidelines.
As the in-house tax professional, the position plays an important role in assessing tax rules on complex transactions by conducting research and providing expert and timely substantive advice and recommendations to managers and employees across the organization.
Additionally, the Tax Advisor may contribute to financial planning, modelling, analysis, and reporting activities that drive strategic business outcomes. This includes collaborating across departments to support high-level decision-making, developing financial models to evaluate business initiatives, and assisting with ongoing financial planning and performance analysis.Job Description

Key Accountabilities:
- Ensure compliance with tax legislation, regulations and filing deadlines within multiple jurisdictions. Identify and inform management of tax risks and mitigation measures.
- Prepare tax returns and remittances including T2, T1044, VAT, GST/HST, SLFI, FET, Sales tax, Non-resident, Country by Country and other taxes where applicable. Assist with preparing tax-related notes disclosures for financial statements for the preparation of corporate tax returns.
- Monitor and review payment requests to non-resident suppliers for requirement to withhold taxes as per federal and or provincial legislation. Advise managers and supplier contacts on non-resident tax withholding requirements. Prepare monthly Regulation 105 remittances and T4A-NR, RL-1’s on an annual basis and within legislated deadlines.
- Gather financial systems data and prepare analysis for the filing of tax returns. Reconcile tax returns with amounts recorded in the general ledger and perform variance analysis of tax-related accounts. Prepare and recommend journal entries to record taxes. Maintain thorough and accurate documentation to support tax filings and audits.
- Provide advanced tax advisory to the organization by conducting research on tax laws and regulations to provide accurate and timely written advice to the business. Develop strategies and recommendations for the effective communication of tax rules, policies, best practices and procedures throughout the organization. Collaborate with various departments of team members to develop tax-efficient strategies.
- Monitor and communicate changes in tax legislation. Maintain accounting and other financial operating systems to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of tax rate applicability as required by tax legislation and coordinating system changes to ensure all tax returns and financial reporting is accurate and compliant.
- Coordinate with internal audit on tax controls and prepare tax processes and policies to ensure tax compliance while improving accuracy and company efficiency.
- Prepare regular reports, financial analyses, presentations, and other financial correspondence for management.
- Participate and/or lead special projects and perform ad-hoc analysis as needed.
- Participate and support the review of business contracts where applicable and provide guidance to management and employees on the interpretation and application of complex tax rules on various business scenarios.
- Support, coordinate and conduct tax audits and inquiries from various tax authorities and external auditors.
- Provide subject matter expertise in on payroll tax matters such as workers compensation, and payroll tax audits where required.
- Provide subject matter expertise in financial planning and analysis activities, including developing financial models, forecasts, and scenario analyses to assist in informed business decisions.
Job Requirements
Education:
- Degree from recognized university in Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and training.
- A professional accounting designation.
Experience:
- 3 to 5 years of work-related experience in taxation.
Knowledge:
- Substantial knowledge and experience of Canadian (federal, provincial, local) and foreign indirect tax laws and regulations (as well as experience in addressing tax-related items put forth in federal / provincial budgets) and their impact within a regulated industry environment, particularly for not-for-profit, private sector businesses operating in Canada.
- Sound understanding of preparing and fling multiple tax compliance returns and tax remittances and working knowledge of penalty and interest timelines.
- Substantial Knowledge of Canadian Income Tax laws and regulations, as they apply to corporations.
- In-depth understanding of IFRS accounting, financial statements, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), particularly as they apply to corporate income tax and indirect taxes and the development of associated policies, practices and procedures.
- Substantial Knowledge of ERP financial, administrative and other operating systems (e.g. accounting, customer billing and procurement systems) and the important role they play in recording accurate and reliable data for the company’s mandatory tax remittance and reporting requirements.
- Knowledge of import/export incoterms, CARM portal, K84 and B3 filing obligations.
Abilities:
- Ability to pay close attention to detail.
- Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of MS Office suite including strong Excel skills, including the ability to create and manage large financial models/pivot tables.
- Clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders
